About Wat Suan Dok

Wat Suan Dok, also known as Wat Buppharam is a revered temple in Chiang Mai and holds high regards amongst locals. Its construction dates back to the 14th century and was done by King Kue Na. If legends are to be believed, a monk named Maha Sumana Thera discovered an artefact of Buddha in Pang Cha, which was believed to possess extraordinary powers. He brought the relic to Chiang Mai, but realising its significance, King Kue Na ordered the construction of the temple. Based on folklore, the relic split into two after it was placed in the temple’s Chedi.
Sharing a deep spiritual connection with Wat Phra Doi Suthep, one fragment of the relic was housed in the temple’s stupa, and the other was placed on the back of a white elephant that died at Doi Suthep. This led to the establishment of Wat Phra Doi Suthep in 1383, where the second artefact was placed.
