About Bai Dinh Pagoda
A renowned Buddhist site, Bai Dinh Pagoda, Vietnam, is located in the Gia Vien district of Ninh Binh province. Nestled on Bai Dinh Mountain, it is also known as the Bai Dinh Temple Spiritual and Cultural Complex and comprises both an ancient and a newly built pagoda.
Talking about the history, the pagoda was built during the Ly Dynasty by a revered monk Nguyen Minh Khong. He visited Bai Dinh Mountain in search of medicinal herbs for the king, when he came across a serene landscape and found it to be the perfect place for a Buddhist practice. He built the pagoda in 1136, which is now the largest Buddhist complex in the whole of Southeast Asia. As for the ancient Bai Dinh Pagoda, it is situated about 800 metres from the new complex at the foot of the mountain.
