Chelamattom Temple, Ernakulam is one of the most celebrated temples in Kerala. Here, Lord Vishnu has been consecrated in three forms – Narasimha, Sri Krishna, and Vamana. Another mystical thing about this temple is that the River Periyar flows adjacent to the temple in the east direction, whereas it flows towards the west in all other areas. As per the legends, Sri Shankaracharya changed the direction of the river here so that he could have morning rituals after taking a bath in this river. The temple has stone carvings and two beautiful bronze deepastambhams (pillars of light).

The Chelamattom Temple is located in Chelamattom village, in the Ernakulam district of Kerala. It is situated halfway between Kalady and Perumbavoor on the Main Central Road.

How To Reach

Tourists can reach this temple by taking a cab or a taxi from Ernakulam, which lies 40 km away from the temple. It is the quickest and easiest way to reach in just 35 minutes. The state-run buses take around 50 minutes.

2. Fort Kochi

Fort Kochi lies in the western part of Kochi city and plays an important role in Kerala’s history. There are several attractions here like the Santa Cruz Basilica. It also has historical monuments like the St. Francis church of Vasco Da Gama, the China Vela, the Dutch Seminary, and many more. Fort Kochi celebrates New Year every year with great pomp and show. The beach at Fort Kochi offers visitors a beautiful view and natural beauty. This beach is also referred to as the ‘Queen of the Arabian Sea’.

3. Ernakulam Shiva Temple

Ernakulam Shiva Temple is one of the rare Shiva temples where the God faces the sea towards the west. It is one of the 108 Shiva temples in Kerala dedicated to Lord Parasurama. The presiding deity is considered the protector of the city, as per the local Hindu faith. It is also one of the 7 royal temples of Kochi Maharajas. ‘Ulsavam’ is a festival celebrated at this temple for 8 days during January/February. Tourists must plan to visit this temple and seek blessings from Lord Shiva.
