The ancient Bhimgarh Fort whispers captivating tales of warfare and instability. Also known as Reasi Fort, the might and majesty of this fort inspire awe among tourists for having withstood centuries of conflict and destruction. Presenting an interesting amalgamation of Mughal and Rajasthani architecture, this place was named after the strongest Pandava brothers from the Mahabharata, Bhim and holds an important place in the Indian history annals. The fort is located on a hillock that is roughly 150 metres high. Initially, Raja Bhimdev Rasyal built it out of clay.

Standing as a true testament to the grandeur and rich heritage of the Kashmiri civilization, Bhimgarh Fort dates back to ancient times with many believing it to have been constructed during the Karkota dynasty. Over the centuries, the fort has undergone several transformations under different dynasties such as Sikh, Hindu and Mughal rulers. The imposing gateways, vast courtyards and well-preserved historical structures offer the visitors a sneak peek of the turbulent times the fort has seen.

1. Dal Lake

Dal Lake is considered to be one of the most visited places in Srinagar by both tourists as well as locals, Dal Lake is the second largest lake in Jammu and Kashmir. The mirror-like water of the lake reflects the snow-capped Himalayan peaks surrounding the lake, thus making for a beautiful and spellbinding picture. A popular attraction of Dal Lake is the floating market where local artisans sell their wares from shikaras.

2. Shankaracharya Temple

Shankaracharya Temple is also known by the name of Jyoteshwar Temple. Historically considered to be one of the oldest temples of Kashmir, the place reflects the popular Kashmiri design with a shikhara style architecture. The place derives its name from the famous priest and philosopher Adi Shankracharya who composed his spiritual text Saundarya Lahiri on this place.

3. Hazratbal Shrine

Hazratbal Shrine is a sacred place that holds high reverence among Muslims. This place signifies the love and devotion that the Muslims feel for Prophet Muhammad. Located on the left side of picturesque Dal Lake, this place houses Moi-e-Muqaddas or the sacred hair from the beard of Prophet Muhammad. There are beautiful chandeliers, decorations and carpets inside the shrine with the outside being surrounded by stunning views of Dal Lake and nearby mountains.

4. Wular Lake

The serene waters of Wular Lake are nestled amidst the breathtaking Kashmir Valley. Named the largest freshwater lake in India and one of the largest ones in Asia, it is fed by the Jhelum river and acts as an important component for sustaining the local ecosystem. In addition to scenic beauty, one can also enjoy the diverse flora and fauna manifested in the surrounding wetlands and marshlands.

5. Pari Mahal

Translating into ‘The Palace of Fairies’, this is a stunning seven-terraced Mughal garden offering some of the picturesque views of Srinagar. Built by the Mughal prince Dara Shikoh, Emperor Shah Jahan’s eldest son, the entire place was constructed to pay homage to Mughal art and has some signature elements of Islamic architecture. Its unique location and height also allowed this place to act as an observatory for teaching astrology and astronomy.
