The Junagadh Caves is a collection of caves featuring a blend of Buddhist, Jain, and Hindu influences. These caves are divided into three main caves: the Khapra Kodia Caves, the Baba Pyara Caves, and the Uperkot Caves. Each cave offers a glance into the unique architectural style, dating back to 500 BC.
Khapra Kodia Caves: These are the oldest caves in Junagadh, reportedly dating back to the 3rd or 4th century. It is believed that the Buddhist monks primarily used these caves as residential quarters, which is why there are unadorned rooms carved out of solid rock inside.
Baba Pyara Caves: Another one of the rock-cut caves that you can explore in Junagadh is the Baba Pyara Caves. With antique artworks dating back to the 1st and 2nd centuries, there are 13 rooms and three stories related to Buddhism and Jainism beliefs.
Uperkot Caves: The last in the complex is the Uperkot caves, which date back to the 2nd and 3rd century AD. One of the main attractions in this cave is the 300-foot moat which has a combination of Graeco-Scythian style architecture. By Air: There are three nearby airports from Junagadh, including Keshod, Porbandar and Rajkot. You can take a taxi from any of these airports to reach the caves.
By Road: Junagadh is well-connected by road to major cities in Gujarat. Regular bus services operate from Ahmedabad, Rajkot, and other nearby cities to Junagadh. 1. Explore The Khapra Kodia Caves

When in Junagadh, the first cave that you must visit is the Khapra Kodia Caves. Being the oldest of the three caves, it has a lot of enriching historical background. Among the three, these are the plainest caves since they served as the residential quarters of the Buddhist monks. Back in the day, the cave was surrounded by Sudarshan Lake. The caves were reportedly carved out of a living rock during the reign of Emperor Ashoka. However, following years of usage, the monks had to abandon the caves after they became unusable due to cracks in them.
2. Marvel At The Baba Pyara Caves

A complete contrast to the Khapra Kodia Caves, Baba Pyara Caves have a lot of unique architecture and man-made caverns. The last of the three caves, the Uperkot Caves are the monastic Buddhist caves that you must explore as well. While only a few buildings of this cave remain intact, it is still significant to the history of Junagadh. The caves are entirely carved out of rocks, depicting the patience and the skills of the people. It is home to several rare and endangered species, including Asiatic lions, leopards, and Indian wolves. There is a museum inside the zoo as well.

3. Durbar Hall Museum
