Babadham Temple is one of 23 temples in a vast temple complex where the other 22 temples are dedicated to different gods and goddesses. The main temple enshrines the revered Shivalinga of Lord Baidyanath, which, according to Hindu mythology, was worshipped by the demon king Ravana, to whom it gave invincibility. The vast complex and the other shrines dedicated to gods and goddesses make this temple a work of architectural genius. The temple is also an offshoot of the Puranic tradition, and the story of its origin is found in the Shiva Purana. But unlike most other Jyotirlingas that are only a Jyotirlinga, the Trimbakeshwar temple is both a Jyotirlinga and a Shakti Peetha, because this temple also venerates Parvati, Shiva’s consort.
