During that time, it was a small gurdwara, but later it was reconstructed into a bigger one. This is also the place where the 9th Sikh guru, Tegh Bahadur, was beheaded on the orders of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in 1675. There was a Mughal Kotwali before constructing this, but later the land was given to the Sikhs by the orders of the British rulers.
