Chingus Fort, also known as “Chingus Sarai”, dates back to the 16th century AD. This fort is known as a transit camp for the Mughals in ancient times. The fort holds great historical significance as it was essential to the administration and military strategies during the Mughal Era. The mortal remains of Mughal Emperor Jehangir are buried at this ancient fort. The architectural style of the fort is quite different from the regular forts as it is a unique blend of Mughal and Rajput architectures. The fort’s museum and various sections house numerous historical artefacts that offer a glimpse of the Mughal times.

The fost is a magnificent historical monument located in a district named Rajouri in Jammu and Kashmir. The fort lies on the National Highway from Jammu to Poonch. It is situated at a distance of about 35 kilometres from Rajouri and 154 kilometres from Jammu City. Visitors can enjoy a scenic view of the Sukhtaw River, which is surrounded by birch trees, from the fort.

By Air: The nearest airport to the fort is Jammu Airport, located at a distance of approximately 160 km. The tourists can hire a taxi from the airport to reach the fort.
By Train: The nearest station is Jammu Tawi, which is about 135 kilometres away from the fort. Taxis and buses are available at the railway station that take visitors to Rajouri.
By Road: Visitors can take buses or hire a taxi from nearby cities, like Jammu, to reach Rajouri. This place is well connected via National Highway (NH-1).
History Of Chingus Fort

According to Iqbal Nama Akbri, Mughal Emperor Jahangir stayed at the fort 11 times between 1605 to 1627 AD. In 1927, the emperor fell ill near Poonch, while returning from Kashmir. The royal caravan stopped at Bharmgala and Jahangir started to recover from the illness. But one day while he went hunting and was waiting for a deer, the attendant with him fell off a boulder and died. This shocking incident took a toll on the emperor’s health and his condition became critical. While returning to Lahore, the emperor died in Rajouri and some of his remains were buried at Chingus Sarai.

This fort was constructed by Mian Hathu, then Governor of Rajouri, in 1855 AD. This Fort was used by the defence in the bygone era. This place was used for storing grains during the Dogra Dynasty and was a hiding spot for the army of the kingdom. The name of this fort was given due to its location at the highest point of the hill. The Dhanidhar Fort overlooks the entire town of Rajouri and offers a mesmerising view of the valley.
