Situated near the temple, the Jantar Mantar is a popular observatory constructed in 1724 by Maharaja Jai Singh of Jaipur. He went on to build other observatories in Ujjain, Varanasi and Mathura. The Jantar Mantar is known for the fascinating astronomical instruments it houses. ‘Jantar Mantar’ literally means ‘instruments for measuring the harmony of the heavens’. In the past, it was used to map the time of the day and for observation of astronomical positions with the naked eye.
