Kalaroos Caves have many legends associated with them; one of the most famous ones states that these specific caves lead straight to Russia. ‘Kalaroos’ is a straight evolution from ‘Qila-e-roos’ or the fort of Russia. When the silk route was either inaccessible or closed, it was believed that these caves passed through Central Asia and Russia. These caves are located in the Kalaroos village in the state of Jammu and Kashmir and are at the top of the mountain. The famous caves trek of around 1 km will take you to the caves’ entrance. In the middle of the hill lies an enormous stone mass named Satbaran.

These caves are located 5 kms from Kupwara. One can take a bus from Srinagar to Kupwara and hire a taxi to reach the caves.

1. Gangabal Lake

The Gangabal Lake can be reached by road up to Naranag, which is 45 kms away from Srinagar, and it takes a 15 km trek to reach the lake. To add to your surprise, this lake is situated at the base of Mount Harmukh and is known as Harmukut Ganga in Hindu mythology. This lake is a scenic delight for those visiting Kashmir and is a must-see attraction.

2. Nichnai Pass

Nichnai Pass is a must for all trek lovers and is 4139 metres above sea level. Also, you should take advantage of the opportunity to visit The Vishansar Lake and Krishnasar Lake, which are close to this pass. This pass is open from June to September, and hiking is the best way to capture the beauty of this raw natural wonder. The trek begins at Sonamarg, which is a 3 hours drive from Srinagar.

3. Drung

Drung is situated 14 kms away from Gulmarg and is an ideal place for rock climbing and trout fishing during summer. Near this place, over the hills in the region, some temple ruins are believed to belong to the time of Pandavas. The best way is to trek 3 km from Tangmarg or use ponies to cover the distance. There is no accommodation or restaurant facility available in Drung, but tourists can stay in Tangmarg, which is 3 kms away, or in Gulmarg.

4. Baba Reshi Shrine

Baba Reshi Shrine is 5 kms from Gulmarg and is a famous place for Muslim Saint Baba Reshi, the famous courtier of King Zain-ul-Abidin of Kashmir. The shrine was constructed in Mughal and Persian architectural designs with magnificent carved wooden work and marvellous gardens all around the shrine. In summer, people can take ponies or even go on foot to visit the shrine; in winter, the shrine can only be reached with the help of a sledge.

5. Apharwat Peak

Apharwat Peak is quite famous among all ski lovers and provides the best professional experience to all skiers. This trekking peak is situated near Alpather Lake, one of the best places to view the peaks in the summer and winter. For those not interested in skiing, there is always a sledge ride to the top of the peak. In summer, there is a different view altogether at Apharwat Peak than in winter. The greenery and colourful meadows are truly amazing here.

6. Pattan

Pattan is a town in Baramulla district most renowned for its beautiful valley. Situated 29 kilometres from Srinagar, Pattan is a good place to visit for its beauty. This place also has the famous Sugandhesa Temple, built by King Sankaravarman in the name of his queen Sugandha. Sankaragaurishwara Temple is also located nearby.

7. Lolab Valley

Famous as ‘Mini Kashmir,’ Lolab Valley is an egg-shaped valley between Kashmir and Neelum Valley. This valley is near the Lahwal River.
