Kbal Spean, also known as the “River of a Thousand Lingas” is an ancient site that is situated on the southwest side of the Kulen Hills in Banteay Srei district in Siem Reap Province. What makes Kbal Spean special are the detailed stone carvings found in the riverbed that consists of various Hindu symbols, including lingas, a sacred symbol of the Lord Shiva.
Besides the lingas, you will spot carvings of other Hindu gods like Brahma, Vishnu, Rama, Lakshmi, and Hanuman along with animals and other symbols. Based on historical records, the carvings in the rocks were created during the rule of King Suryavarman I and continued till the reign of King Udayadityavarman II between the 11th and 12th centuries.
