Located on the northern bank of Pangong Tso Lake, Khurnak Fort has always been a site of interest for many. Now in ruins, the fort was built by the Changpa tribes of Tibet in 1867. Talking about Khurnak Fort Tibet, it stretches from eastern Ladakh in India to Rutog County in Tibet, a region under China’s control. It is because of this reason, India and China have a dispute over the fort.
According to reports, China gained control over the fort in 1958, and it has been that way since then. Although the fort is in ruins, it serves as an important landmark. Marking the middle of Pangong Lake, Khurnak Fort China, is located at the western edge of a plain, which was formed because of the alluvial fan of Changlun Lungpa river. Locally, the plain is known as Ote Plain, but now it is named the Khurnak Plain.
As far as the architecture of Khurnak Fort is concerned, it reflects traditional Tibetan influences and sturdy stone construction. However, you can barely see any of it now as the fort is no longer in good condition. Talking about that, the fort was originally designed to withstand extreme weather and enemy attacks. By Air: There are no direct flights to Pangong Tso Lake. This means you have to first reach Kushok Bakula Airport in Leh and then travel by road from there.
By Rail: You cannot access Ladakh by rail as it has no railway lines. The nearest railway station to the region is Jammu Tawi, so that’s your only option. Reaching Jammu on a train, take a tempo, bus, or shared taxi to Leh.
By Road: If you choose to travel by road, you have two routes to choose from. You can either opt for the Manali – Jispa – Leh route, or the Jammu – Srinagar Leh route.
