2. Boiling Lake

The Boiling Lake is a rare natural phenomenon with volcanic hydrothermal features. It is filled with greyish-blue bubbling water enveloped by a cloud of vapour. The lake extends to around 200 ft. in depth. While the water in the lake remains boiling, there have been varied levels of temperatures and water levels recorded, the first being in 1870. One of the most popular of Dominica’s trails, this lake is reached after a difficult 3 – 4 hour trek beginning from the Laudat village. The trek enables people to spot a variety of tropical flowers and trees, fern species, palms and wildlife enroute as you traverse the rainforest.

3. Boeri Lake

At an altitude of 2850 ft, Boer Lake is the highest lake in Dominica. Often covered by mist, this lake is in Morne Trois Pitons National Park on the slopes of the Morne Micotrin. Boeri is named after a river in the area and is an example of a crater lake. It has a depth of 117 feet and is circular in shape. The water level can vary drastically depending on the season and the weather. It is highest from October to December and drops by 25 feet in the dry season. The trail towards the lake offers stunning views from the Atlantic coast to the Freshwater Lake.

4. Kachibona Lake

Situated high up in Colihaut near the Waitukubuli National Trail, the Kachibona Lake is one of the hidden treasures of Dominica. While it is a small lake (0.27 m long), the rainforest setting and the calm and tranquil environment make the trek worthwhile. You can soak in the fresh air of the forest while listening to soothing bird sounds. History has it that slaves hid in this area during the 17th and 18th centuries. Du Mas Lake is a very small but scenic lake nestled in Saint George Parish in the Roseau Valley. Located above the villages of Wotten Waven and Morne Prosper inside a rainforest, this lake offers adventurers a tranquil escape. The taller waterfall is referred to as the “Papa Falls” and the shorter one is known as the “Mama Falls”. Both waterfalls are tributaries of the Roseau River. The “Breakfast River” that appears enroute the hike to Boiling Lake tumbles into the shorter waterfall while the water that leaves the Freshwater Lake joins the bigger waterfall. Fort George and Fort Shirley are only a five-minute walk from the park entrance, and they overlook the lovely Prince Rupert Bay. The park has three adventurous long trials that run across the officer’s quarters, the powder magazine, the soldier’s barracks, and other relics.
