Ousteri Lake, also referred to as Osudu Lake, is Pondicherry’s largest freshwater lake and occupies around 800 hectares, 390 hectares of which lie in the union territory and the remaining in Tamil Nadu. Ousteri Lake, being man-made, has been designated as an Important Bird Area (IBA) based on its high level of biodiversity and acting as the habitat of approximately 200 species of birds, including migratory birds like golden orioles, openbill storks, and painted storks. The ecosystem of the lake includes a combination of aquatic organisms and vegetation from small herbs to trees that support migratory as well as indigenous birds during winter and summer.

2. Bahour Lake

This lake in Pondicherry is of historical importance, dating to the Chola era, and has been known as ‘Peria Eri’ (the big lake) and ‘Kadambu Eri’ (the lake with Kadambu trees) in ancient inscriptions. These inscriptions also refer to a Council of Elders, ‘Eri Varya Perumakkal,’ which was in charge of maintaining the lake and distributing water. The ecosystem of the lake sustains a wide variety of flora and fauna, and hence it is an important ecological area in the region.
