1. Tawang Monastery

Tawang Monastery is the largest monastery in India and the second largest in the world. It was established in the 17th century by Merak lama Lodre Gyatso. It is a major centre for Buddhist spirituality and study and a part of the Gelugpa branch of Tibetan Buddhism. Within the monastery complex is a magnificent three-story building that is decorated with exquisite thangkas which are Buddhist paintings and murals. Every year, the lively Torgya Festival showcases ancient dances, rituals, and cultural events, drawing both pilgrims and tourists.

2. Kalachakra Gompa

Kalachakra Gompa is located in Tawang district, the biggest monastery in Arunachal Pradesh. It is also known as Kalachakra Monastery. It is a part of the larger Tawang Monastery complex, the second largest in the world after the Vatican. The Kalachakra Gompa is devoted to the Kalachakra god, a key figure in Tibetan Buddhism who represents cycles of time. Bomdila Monastery, established in 1965 belongs to the Mahayana branch of Buddhism. It was formerly known as Gentse Gaden Rabgyel Ling Monastery, the popular monastery in Arunachal Pradesh. It acts as the centre for social events and spiritual activities. The monastery is split into three sections — the main prayer hall, the Buddha temple, and the monk’s living quarters. It is also referred to as Khinmey Gompa. It was established by His Holiness, the 14th Thegtse Rinpoche. It functions as the regional hub for Nyingma practices and teachings. It is a relatively new monastery compared to the other Arunachal Pradesh monasteries. The monastery seeks to advance cultural preservation, meditation, and Buddhist education. Architectural elements from traditional and modern designs are combined in the architecture of the monastery. It has a main prayer hall, monks’ living quarters, classrooms, and a library. Buddha sculptures and other important Buddhist figures adorn the prayer hall, along with elaborate murals and thangkas.

6. Dirang Monastery

Situated in the West Kameng region of Arunachal Pradesh, Dirang Monastery, commonly referred to as Dirang Dzong, is an important cultural and historical monument. It is one of the best monasteries in Arunachal Pradesh. Built around 500 years ago, this ancient fort-monastery showcases traditional stone architecture unique to the Monpa tribe. It is an important hub for Buddhist practices and the preservation of Monpa heritage. Dirang Dzong, which is 4,900 feet above sea level, provides breathtaking views of Dirang Valley and is best visited from March to October.

7. Taktsang Gompa

Situated on a cliff in Bhutan’s Paro Valley, Tatsang Gompa, also called Tiger’s Nest Monastery, is a well-known Buddhist monastery, among the famous monasteries in Arunachal Pradesh. Located at almost 3,120 meters (10,240 ft) above sea level, this 1692 monument offers stunning views of the surroundings. The monastery is a prominent pilgrimage destination that boasts a breathtaking setting with luscious woodlands and steep rocks as a backdrop. Guru Padmasambhava who is regarded for introducing Buddhism to Bhutan resided here for meditation. The Tatsang Gompa trek is difficult but worthwhile.
