Originally a part of the royal palace complex of King Mindon, it was moved to its current location by his son, King Thibaw in 1880. The monastery is also known as Golden Palace Monastery and is popular for its intricate teakwood carvings, depicting Buddhist teachings and mythical creatures. Featuring traditional Burmese architectural style, Shwenandaw Monastery is the only remaining structure of the Royal Palace.

3. Atumashi Monastery

Carrying decades of history, Atumashi Monastery is one of the grandest monasteries you will see in Myanmar. Located in Mandalay, Atumashi Monastery was built in 1857 by King Mindon Min. According to records, the original structure was constructed using teak and the exterior was covered with stucco. Additionally, the monastery housed a massive Buddha statue, which was 30 feet tall and featured precious gems. However, everything was destroyed when the monastery caught fire in 1890. With an initiative by Burma’s Archaeological Department, the monastery was rebuilt in 1996 to preserve its original design.

4. Maha Min Htin Monastery

One of the popular monasteries in Myanmar is located in Mandalay and holds deep historical and religious significance. Constructed by Pyay Prince in 1852, Maha Min Htin Monastery is 173 years old. Some of you may not know, but the original structure was first built in Inwa and later moved to its current location in 1876. Based on records, the entire monastery was funded by Daw Shwe Pwint, a wealthy lady of that time. Established in 1908, Mahagandhayon Monastery is situated in Amarapura. As one of the most prestigious monastic institutions, Mahagandhayon Monastery is known for its strict Buddhist teachings and traditions. Following Vinaya, the Buddhist monastic code, the monks in the monastery lead a disciplined life, where they only focus on meditation, study, scripture, and alms collection. Although the monastery was constructed by Agatithuka Sayadaw, it gained prominence in 1914, under Ashin Janakabhivamsa.
