Nestled in the serene hills of North Sikkim, Phodong Monastery is a hidden gem that gives a glimpse into the rich culture of Tibetan Buddhism. The monastery was named after the village of Phodong, where it is located. Established in the early 18th century by the fourth Chogyal (King) Gyurmed Namgyal, this monastery is an important spiritual centre for the Karma Kagyu sect and one of Sikkim’s most important Buddhist monasteries. By Road: The monastery is well-connected by road. You can hire a taxi from Gangtok or take a shared jeep to reach. It takes approximately one hour and 30 minutes to reach here by road.
By Air: The nearest airport is Pakyong Airport, which is around 66 kilometres away. However, for international flights, Bagdogra International Airport is 162 kilometres away. From there, you can take a shared cab or hire a taxi to reach Gangtok and then proceed to Phodong.
By Rail: The nearest railway station to the Phodong Monastery is New Jalpaiguri (NJP) Railway Station, about 157 kilometres away from the Monastery. From there, you can take a taxi or bus to Gangtok and then travel to Phodong.

Tsomgo Lake is surrounded by snow-capped mountains and is a great place for a day trip. The lake’s appearance changes mesmerisingly with the seasons. The lake remains frozen in winter amidst a magical, pristine white landscape. As the snow melts in spring, the lake reflects a brilliant sapphire blue, surrounded by blooming wildflowers such as rhododendrons, primulas, and poppies. Kabi Lungchok is a historical site where the treaty of brotherhood between the Lepchas and Bhutias was signed. Lepchas are considered to be the original inhabitants of Sikkim, and the Bhutias are known to have migrated from Tibet. Life-size statues of the Chiefs who signed the treaty have been erected here. It serves as a reminder of the unity and harmony between these communities. It is one of the three trading border posts between India and China and holds significant historical and strategic importance. Nathula Pass was also a part of the ancient Silk Route, which facilitated trade between India and Tibet since ancient times. On a clear day, visitors can see the majestic views of snow-clad peaks, including Kanchenjunga.
