Pisharikavu Temple is one of the most prominent temples in Kozhikode, dedicated to Goddess Bhagvathy. The temple has two shrines, located to Lord Shiva and Goddess Devi, respectively. This is a centuries-old temple and has exquisite, eye-catching mural paintings and wood carvings in its architecture. The Elephant Pageants during the festival season are a special attraction here. Devotees flock in large numbers to seek blessings of the Goddess. The temple celebrates a festival for 8 days in the Malayalam month, performing various poojas and rituals. The legend says that the Ettuveettil family were rich diamond merchants. One of their family members did a lot of meditation with devotion and sincerity and pleased Goddess Bhadrakali. One night, their family goddess Sri Porkali came into view in his dream and gave him a special sword named ‘Nandhakam’ and ordered him to pray to her in the form of this sword and to return to his hometown. He then raised a temple in his hometown and prayed to the sword every day. By the grace of Goddess Bhadrakali, their family became powerful and very rich.
