The church was first built as a chapel in the 16th century on a hilltop. In the 17th century, it was extended and a large church replaced the smaller chapel. The Chapora Fort in the Bardez Taluka, gets its name from the Chapora River. It was built under the reign of ruler Adil Shah. The fort provides the visitors a panoramic view of the Chapora River across to Morjim. The fort is situated amidst several steep slopes. This market in North Goa is located quite close to the Anjuna Beach. It was the first ever organized market in Goa. It came into existence in 1960 and has been thriving commercially ever since.
