In the Palakkad district of Kerala, the Thiruvalathur Randu Moorthy Temple allures pilgrims and tourists alike with its striking structural beauty and architecture that is quite different from others in the region. The temple is dedicated to 2 different forms of mother goddess namely Mahishasura mardini and Annapoorneshwiri. One can see some fine stone sculptures as well as woodwork in the temple complex. According to a legend, the outer wall of the temple was built by an army of gods in one night and was left unfinished as dawn came.

2. Kalpathy Heritage Temple Complex

One of the most magnificent Palakkad temples, the Kalpathy Heritage Temple Complex is one of the oldest and the biggest temple in Palakkad. The place still follows the ancient Brahmin culture that has been passed down for generations and still going strong. Palakkad is said to be the epicentre for the Tamil Brahmins of Kerala with several agraharams or Brahmin community streets located here. This UNESCO Heritage site is also famous for its Chariot festival and the raw original lifestyle of the residents.

3. Sri Emoor Bhagavathy Temple

Also called the Hemambika Temple, Sri Emoor Bhagavathy Temple is dedicated to Goddess Hemambika. According to a popular legend, the goddess once appeared in front of a devotee near a pond. However, when she witnessed a crowd gathering around, she disappeared immediately leaving behind the sight of only two raised hands. These raised hands froze into stone and are continued to be worshipped till date.

4. Sri Chinakkathoor Bhagavathy Temple

Near Ottapalam in Palakkad, the Chinakkathoor Bhagvathy temple is quite famous for its annual Chinakkathoor Pooram festival held in the Malayalam Kumbham month. There are two main shrines in the temple- Melakavu shrine which is older and Thazhekavu shrine which is a lower and younger shrine. In addition to these, there is an additional shrine dedicated to Lord Ganapati in his divine ‘Vidya Ganapti’ form.

The Killikkurissi Mahadeva Temple, in the village of Lakkidi in Palakkad, is the 82nd temple among the 108 Shiva temples. This popular temple in Palakkad has unique architecture that captures the attention of both the pilgrims and history buffs. 6. Sri Ramaswamy Temple

According to legends, this is the place where Lord Rama renounced his life on the banks of River Sarayu (also known as River Karimpuzha) accompanied by Lord Hanuman. One of the oldest and most famous Palakkad tourist places, the Panniyur Sri Varahamurthy temple is believed to have been built by Parasurama around 4000 years ago. The place is often visited by both pilgrims as well as history buffs. The place is also renowned for having a close association with Perumthachan, the master carpenter. Dedicated to the third avatar of Lord Vishnu, it is believed that Perumthachan took refuge in this temple after the death of his son and finally abandoned his work tools here.
