The Thiruvambadi Temple is a majestic ancient temple that combines history, tradition, and culture to give an unforgettable experience. The Thiruvambadi Temple is located at Patturaikkal, in the heart of Thrissur city, in Kerala. It is around 800 meters from the city’s central point known as Swaraj Round, on the Shornur road.

Temple’s History

The Thiruvambady Temple is believed to have been built over 1,000 years ago, during the reign of the Chera dynasty. The temple was initially built as a small shrine some 15 kilometres away from its current location, dedicated to Lord Krishna, and was known as “Thiruvambady” or “Thiruvambadi”, meaning “Sacred Ambady” or “Sacred Place of Ambady”. However, the idol of lord Krishna was brought to its current location in the 16th Century and a new temple was built.

The temple is well-connected by roadways to the nearest railway station and airport. They are only 10 minutes drive away from the temple. The Punkunnam Railway Station is hardly 250 meters from the temple. You can hire a cab or use an autorickshaw from the airport, railway station, or anywhere within the city of Thrissur to reach this temple.

It is very close to the dense green forests and is home to several endangered species of flora and fauna. This natural cascade of foamy waters with breathtaking surroundings captivates the visitors. It is one of the participating temples in the famous Thrissur Pooram festival, where 15 elephants walk in a procession from Paramekkavu to the Vadakkumnathan Temple.
