The Thiruvambady Temple is believed to have been built over 1,000 years ago, during the reign of the Chera dynasty. The temple was initially built as a small shrine some 15 kilometres away from its current location, dedicated to Lord Krishna, and was known as “Thiruvambady” or “Thiruvambadi”, meaning “Sacred Ambady” or “Sacred Place of Ambady”. However, the idol of lord Krishna was brought to its current location in the 16th Century and a new temple was built.

The temple is well-connected by roadways to the nearest railway station and airport. They are only 10 minutes drive away from the temple. The Punkunnam Railway Station is hardly 250 meters from the temple.
