The Trivandrum Museum and Zoo was started in 1857 by the Maharaja of Travancore, Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma, as a horse breeding centre. The complex was redesigned by his brother, Uthram Thirunal Marthanda Varma, and the British Resident General Cullen.
