The deity is Lord Kayarohana, with Nilayathakshi being his consort. The temple was constituted in the 6th century AD and has gained acknowledgement from the saints, Nayanmars Appar, Sambandar, and Sundarar. The temple was built by a sect called the Lakulisa, which originated in Gujarat and has one more temple in Tamil Nadu at Kanchipuram. Architecturally, it belongs to the style common to the Dravidian style.

Adi Kumbeswarar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple was built around the 9th century during the reign of the Chola dynasty. The presiding deity is known as Adi Kumbeswarar, and the goddess goes by the name of Mangalambigai Amman. The temple complex covers 30,181 sq ft and is the largest in Kumbakonam. There are four gateway towers called gopurams at each entrance, with the eastern tower being the tallest, standing up to 128 feet. The temple is well known for its sixteen-pillared halls, and each stone in the pillars carries 27 unique stars.
