It is believed that Lord Shiva manifested himself as a massive column of fire that is represented by Arunachala Hills. The consort of Lord Shiva, Mother Parvati, is represented as Unnamalai Amman in the temple. Other than this, the temples also have numerous small shrines. The circumambulation called Girivalam is the fourteen-kilometre-long circumference of the hill. Cholas probably built the temple enclosure during the 9th century, and later, it was developed into its full dimensions by Vijayanagara and Nayakar kings. It is one of the best examples of Dravidian art. The marvellous East Gopuram is over two hundred feet (217ft) tall and most certainly took many years to build.<\/p>\n
