The Kurungaleeswarar Temple is situated on the banks of the Cooum River and was founded in the mediaeval Chola period in honour of Lord Shiva. Legends say that it is connected with the Ramayana period. Sita Devi was under Sage Valmiki’s care during her exile, and during this period, she gave birth to her two sons, Lava and Kusa. The temple itself dates to the time of Kulothunga Chola in the 12th century. It contains a large tank and is surrounded by the wonderful stone-pillared prakarams.<\/em><\/p>\n
