The temple got its name from the fact that it is located near the shore of the Bay of Bengal. The Mahabalipuram Shore Temple is situated near a serene beach known as Mahabalipuram Beach. It is known to be one of the seven temples that were built by the Pallava rulers. Six of them got submerged in the water along the coastline, and traces of them were found when a tsunami hit in 2004.
