Madmaheshwar Temple, located in Gaundar village in the Garhwal Himalayas, Uttarakhand, is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is at an elevation of 3497 m. This temple is one of the Panch Kedar pilgrimages, where there are 5 Shiva temples in the Garhwal region. The middle or belly part, which is also called the Nabhi of Lord Shiva, is worshipped here. This temple is believed to have been built by the Pandavas from the Mahabharata. There are two other small temples inside this complex, one for Goddess Parvati and one for Ardhanarishwara.<\/em> <\/p>\n

The temple, located in the Garhwal Himalayas in a village called Gaudar, is surrounded by the snowy peaks of Chaukhamba, Neel Kanth and Kedarnath in a green valley. The Kedar Hills gives a beautiful view of the mountain formation with many glaciers that also include the Mandakini River. When Pandavas looked for Lord Shiva in Varanasi and reached the Garhwal Hills, Bheema separated two mountains to look for Shiva. This temple is located in the Rudraprayag district, located at an altitude of 3680 m below the peak of Chandrashila. The mountains of this temple form the Mandakini and Alaknanda rivers. Kalimath Temple is located in Rudraprayag District which is at an altitude of 6,000 feet on the Saraswati River. This temple is dedicated to the goddess Kali, which is one of the Shakti peethas. An eternal flame burns in the temple. Sri Yantra is worshipped in the temple. The idol of the goddess Kali is taken out every year on one day to perform puja by the chief priest in the temple. This place is believed to be where Goddess Parvati, also known as Gauri, lived while carrying out practices to win over Shiva’s affection and also this is where Lord Shiva admitted his love for her. The temple is open only from May to November from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The best time to visit the temple is between the months of May to June and September to October because during these months the weather is ideal and safer to travel. During the extreme winter and rainy season, the climate is very cold and unpredictable, which is also not safe to trek, travel and also visit nearby places in this region.<\/p>\n
