It used to be home to the Emerald Buddha, a very important statue in Thailand. But in 1545, an earthquake happened, and they moved the statue to Bangkok for safety. To remember the old days, they put a copy of the Emerald Buddha in the temple in 1995. This new statue is made of black jade. They put it in the same spot where the original one used to be. Even though the original statue is gone, Wat Chedi Luang is still a working temple. Monks live there, and people come to pray at its many shrines.
