Kbal Spean, also known as the \u201cRiver of a Thousand Lingas\u201d is an ancient site that is situated on the southwest side of the Kulen Hills in Banteay Srei district in Siem Reap Province. What makes Kbal Spean special are the detailed stone carvings found in the riverbed that consists of various Hindu symbols, including lingas, a sacred symbol of the Lord Shiva. <\/p>\n

Besides the lingas, you will spot carvings of other Hindu gods like Brahma, Vishnu, Rama, Lakshmi, and Hanuman along with animals and other symbols. To get a better idea, you can check Kbal Spean’s photos before your visit. Located 50 km from Siem Reap town, Kbal Spean is hidden deep in the Cambodian forest. <\/p>\n

Based on historical records, the carvings in the rocks were created during the rule of King Suryavarman I and continued till the reign of King Udayadityavarman II between the 11th and 12th centuries. As far as it is known, there are thousands of lingas carved in the riverbed that were made by local hermits. There are also historical writings found at the site that show most carvings were completed during King Udayadityavarman II\u2019s rule. In 1059 AD, the king also placed a golden linga at the site as a sacred offering.<\/p>\n
