The history of the temple dates back to several centuries and it is reportedly one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, where parts of Goddess Sati’s body are said to have fallen. Legends depict that Goddess Hingula, the presiding deity in the temple, was brought by the King of Puri, Birbar Harichandan, on the advice of Lord Jagannath. It features intricate architecture, built in the traditional Odia style with a sanctum sanctorum inside which the idol of the presiding deity resides. Inside the inner sanctum lies a fire pit, where the sacred fire of Goddess Hingula is kept burning.<\/p>\n
