The temple was initially built as a small shrine some 15 kilometres away from its current location, dedicated to Lord Krishna, and was known as &#8220;Thiruvambady&#8221; or &#8220;Thiruvambadi&#8221;, meaning &#8220;Sacred Ambady&#8221; or &#8220;Sacred Place of Ambady&#8221;.
