1. Qila Mubarak

Among the popular Punjab forts, Qila Mubarak is undoubtedly the most iconic of them all. The fort dates back to the year 1764 when it was commissioned by Maharaja Ala Singh. The main significance behind the fort’s construction was to serve as the royal residence and military stronghold. The architecture of this fort has a blend of Mughal and Rajput styles, especially with the jharokhas, grand courtyards, and delicate mirrorwork. One of the key highlights of this place is the Durbar Hall, where you get a glimpse into the rare weapons, artefacts, and vintage furniture from the royal era.

2. Gobindgarh Fort

The existence of the Gobindgarh Fort is a symbol of Punjab’s military might. The fort was constructed by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1809. The fort is located in Amritsar and served a great purpose in shielding Punjab against the invaders. The fort houses several attractions, including a museum showcasing the life of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, weaponry, and the famous Kohinoor Diamond replica. You get a glimpse into the rich heritage through light and sound shows, cultural performances, and exhibitions that take place inside the fort. 3. Faridkot Fort

Although a comparably smaller fort, Faridkot Fort is one of the best forts in Punjab especially due to its unique architecture. The fort is a reflection of Punjab’s royal dynasties and with its light shade of blue, it is a sight to behold. The construction of this fort dates back to the 13th century when it was commissioned by Raja Mokulsi. Later, the fort became the prime point of residence for the royal families of the reigning power of Faridkot. On the walls of the fort, you get to witness the wall paintings, and stunning frescoes, which depict the talent of the artisans.

4. Anandpur Sahib Fort

Anandpur Sahib is one of the holiest places in Sikh history, and its fortifications hold immense religious and historical significance. Also known as Qila Anandpur Sahib, the fort was reportedly constructed by Guru Gobind Singh in the 17th century and it stood tall as a defensive stronghold during times of conflict. It is said that the fort also served a very critical purpose during the Mughal-Sikh wars and was the birthplace of the Khalsa in 1699. While you are planning your visit to the fort, ensure to visit the Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, which is one of the five most sacred seats of Sikh authority.

5. Phillaur Fort

More commonly known as Ludhiana Fort, Phillaur Fort is one of the most popular forts in Punjab. Its origins date back to the 17th century when it was originally built by the Mughal governor of Punjab. However, it was Maharaja Ranjit Singh who transformed it into a formidable military fortification. If you look closely, the fort’s design is heavily influenced by European military architecture. During the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the fort served as a massive defence point too. Today, Phillaur Fort houses a police training academy and is not fully open to the public, but its historical significance continues to draw visitors.

6. Shahpur Kandi Fort

Despite how less talked about it is, Shahpur Kandi Fort in Pathankot is another one of the historical forts in Punjab. The fort dates back to the 16th century when it was reportedly built by Rajput chief Jaspal Singh Pathania. The fort is located on the banks of the Ravi River near Pathankot. Due to its proximity to the Kashmir region, the fort played a significant role in ensuring optimal safety against the invasions from the north. The majority of the fort now remains in ruins but from the top, you get to witness panoramic views of the countryside and the river.

7. Bahadurgarh Fort

Another popular fort in Patiala that deserves to be highlighted is the Bahadurgarh Fort. The fort is located around 6 km from the main town, making it an easily accessible spot. The fort’s initial construction was commissioned by Nawab Saif Khan in 1658. However, the construction of the fort was further expanded by Maharaja Karam Singh of Patiala in 1837. One of the most important elements of the fort worth noticing is the 110-metre-wide moat and the walls, which are reportedly 20 metres high. There is a gurdwara and a palace inside the fort too, which you should explore as well.

8. The Palace Of Maharaja Sher Singh

Located in Batala, Punjab, The Palace of Maharaja Sher Singh is another fort cum palace that deserves to be explored. It is located in the Gurdaspur district and dates back to the 19th century. The entire palace is constructed out of mud plastering, sourced locally. The palace was also part of the Anarkali building and its design is heavily influenced by the Shalimar Gardens in Lahore. While a lot of the palace now remains in ruins, you will find paintings, etc. inside the palace, adding to its charm. The palace itself is two storeys and there are bastions around it for protection.

9. Bharatgarh Fort

10. Lodhi Fort

Located in Ludhiana, Lodhi Fort is yet another one of the must-visit forts in Punjab. It is also known as Purana Qila and was commissioned to be built by Sikander Lodhi about 500 years ago. The main objective behind the construction of the fort was protection against enemies and invaders. Inside the fort, one of the main attractions is the network of underground tunnels. These tunnels also directly lead to the residence of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Although the fort has a lot of historical significance, the majority of its existence now remains in ruins. The last year of maintenance was until 1946.
